Carrying Abby’s House Forward Together

By Jennifer Spicer

A Collective Commitment to Our Mission
Our Annual Meeting was a chance to reflect and recognize the many people who make Abby’s House what it is. This work has never belonged to one person or one department. It belongs to our residents, guests, staff, board, donors, volunteers, and partners who show up every day to create opportunity for women and families.

Strengthening the Foundation for Our Growing Needs
This past year focused on strengthening the foundation that allows Abby’s House to thrive across every department and program. Behind the scenes, teams spanning Finance, Human Resources, Women’s Services, Housing, Fundraising and Development, and Thrift worked together to complete a clean audit, upgrade financial and operation systems, improve safety across our properties, and align internal processes to support long-term stability. While much of this work happens out of view, it is critical. Strong systems, thoughtful stewardship, and safe spaces allow our staff to focus their time and energy where it matters most: supporting women and families with dignity, care, and consistency.

At the heart of this work, we continue to meet an urgent and growing need. Our shelter operated at or near full capacity throughout the year, reflecting both the level of need in our community and the trust placed in Abby’s House. Through full staffing, expanded programming, new partnerships, and pilot resident training initiatives, our teams supported women as they rebuild. In close collaboration, our Housing team ensured that our residences remained safe and our properties well maintained, creating environments where healing and growth are possible.

Fundraising and Development efforts made this work sustainable. Through generous donor support, community partnerships, grants, and events, these efforts provided the resources that power our programs and long-term vision. Thrift also played a vital role, not only as a key revenue stream, but as a community hub driven largely by volunteers whose time and dedication extend our reach every day.

Together, each department plays a distinct but deeply connected role. From infrastructure and fundraising to housing and direct services, it is this collective effort that allows Abby’s House to respond to today’s needs while preparing thoughtfully for the future.

A Record-Breaking Year for Thrift
This year also marked our biggest year in Thrift ever. None of this would have been possible without our volunteers. This year, volunteers donated an incredible 11,969 hours. That is the equivalent of nearly six and a half full time staff members. We are deeply grateful for the time and energy our volunteers bring to Abby’s House. We truly couldn’t do it without them.

Board Leadership and Transitions
We also shared important Board of Directors updates. We extend heartfelt thanks to our outgoing board members for their leadership and service, and we are pleased to welcome new board and committee members who bring valuable perspective and expertise to this work. We are excited to announce Paula Sasso as the new Chair of the Board of Directors and thank Jenn Dragon, our past chair, for guiding Abby’s House with care and commitment.

Looking Ahead: 50 Years of Opening Doors
As we look ahead, Abby’s House enters a milestone year. In 2026, we celebrate 50 years of opening doors and creating belonging. We hope you will join us for our 50th Anniversary Gala on May 29 at the College of the Holy Cross as we honor our past and look toward the future together.
