Our Story

Who is Abby?

Abby Kelley Foster was born in 1811 in Pelham, Massachusetts. She became one of the most radical and relentless voices in the abolitionist and women’s rights movements of the 19th century. She endured mob attacks, social ostracism, and institutional resistance. She kept going anyway.

Foster believed that the work of liberation required showing up in person, over and over, even when it was unwelcome. She once said: “Go where you are least wanted, for there you are most needed.”

We carry her name not just as a tribute but as a continuing challenge.

Our Founder

In 1975, a Worcester woman named Annette Rafferty looked at her city and saw women sleeping outside, women fleeing violence, women with nowhere to go. She was not a social worker or a politician. She was a community member who decided that waiting for someone else to act was not an option.

Rafferty gathered a small group of committed women, found a house, and opened the doors. The organization was named for Abby Kelley Foster, another Worcester woman who refused to look away from injustice.

Annette Rafferty led Abby’s House for decades. The ARST Fund, the Annette Rafferty Survive to Thrive Fund, was created in her honor to provide emergency financial support to women in crisis.
