We are honored to share that Abby’s House was recently featured in The Worcester Guardian, Worcester’s trusted source for local news and in-depth community reporting.
In the article, written by reporter Jason Bleau, Abby’s House is recognized as it marks its 50th anniversary, a milestone celebrated at the special event “I Am Abby’s House: 50 Years of Brilliance & Belonging” on May 29, 2026.
The piece traces the origins of Abby’s House to the 1970s, when founder Annette Rafferty launched a grassroots effort to bring shelter to women and children in Worcester after her initial proposal was voted down by a community commission. Fifty years later, Abby’s House remains a vital resource — offering emergency shelter, permanent supportive housing, and individualized advocacy services rooted in dignity, safety, and belonging.
Executive Director Julie Orozco delivered remarks at the sold-out anniversary gala, reflecting on how Abby’s House has grown and evolved while staying true to its founding mission. The evening also included a presentation of the Key to the City from Worcester City Manager Eric Batista and City Councilor-at-Large Kate Toomey — the organization’s fifth such honor, one for each decade of service.
The night also marked a special first: the inaugural Light Keeper Award, a new honor dedicated to a staff member who serves as a beacon of advocacy within the Abby’s House community. We are proud to share that Women’s Advocate Shayla Halloran received this award, a recognition of her unwavering commitment to the women and families we serve.
We are deeply grateful to The Worcester Guardian and to Jason Bleau for telling our story and shining a light on the ongoing need for safe, supportive housing for women and children in Central Massachusetts.
