WORCESTER — In her 60s, retired and unable to afford market-rate housing in Worcester on her limited income, Mary J. Chenaille turned to Abby’s House when she could no longer stay with a friend who had let her sleep on her couch for more than a year.

After three years at Abby’s House, she moved into to her own apartment in Worcester in June 2016.

“I don’t know where I would have ended up without Abby’s House,” said Ms. Chenaille, 64, at Abby’s House Wednesday for an event attended by state and local officials, including Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito, to announce the public phase of Abby’s House $2 million capital campaign to renovate the building at 52 High St., which is home to more than 50 women.
