Congratulations, Paula Sasso! 2025 Annette Rafferty Award Recipient

Before the porch light was even turned on, a nineteen-year-old, Paula, a student at Holy Cross sat in an organizational meeting with Abby’s House founder, Annette Rafferty. As Annette spoke about her vision for opening the shelter, Paula felt an undeniable sense of excitement. She was inspired, and she knew she had to get involved. The passion and mission behind Abby’s House lit a spark in Paula that would grow into a lifelong commitment to the organization.

Despite the warmth and welcoming nature of the shelter, volunteering there exposed Paula to the harsh realities many women face. One conversation, in particular, stayed with her. “I remember talking to a woman at the shelter, and as we spoke, I realized—this could be anyone. This could be my mom.” This personal connection motivated Paula to continue supporting Abby’s House, even as her life took her in different directions.

After graduating, Paula entered the workforce, but she never let go of her bond with Abby’s House. She frequently brought donations of clothes to the Abby’s House Thrift Store, still staying involved and giving back. Her commitment did not waver, and when retirement came, Paula knew exactly what she wanted to do next: return to Abby’s House.

Paula had always believed that Abby’s House was where she could make a significant impact. “I really appreciate the quote by Abby Kelley Foster, ‘Go where least wanted, for there you are most needed.’ The history of Abby Kelley Foster and the fact that Annette named Abby’s House after her is really important to me,” Paula reflects.

Throughout the years, Annette Rafferty has been a role model to Paula, and Paula’s dedication to Abby’s House has only grown. Today, Paula not only volunteers at the Thrift Shop but also serves on the Board of Directors, where she has been instrumental in securing the financial stability of the organization. She played a key role in creating the Investment Committee and now serves as its chair, ensuring the long-term sustainability of Abby’s House. “Everyone I volunteer with is truly committed to what they do. But if you ask them why, the answer is always the same—it’s because of the mission.”

“Paula is an inspiration!” says one volunteer when nominating Paula for this year’s Annette Rafferty Award. “Her commitment to Abby’s House began when she was a student at Holy Cross, and she continues to give back in so many ways. She is one of the first volunteers from the Holy Cross community, and decades later, she’s still here, helping to shape the future of Abby’s House.”

Paula’s impact is immeasurable. As a member of the Legacy Circle, she has designated Abby’s House as a beneficiary of her will, ensuring that her generosity will continue to make a difference for generations to come. Beyond her volunteer work, Paula also represents Abby’s House at local events, sharing her story and advocating for the vital services the organization provides.

We are honored to recognize Paula’s years of service and dedication to Abby’s House. “I can’t imagine my life without Abby’s House,” she says. Her passion ensures that countless women will continue to find strength, safety, and community when they need it most.

Congratulations, Paula!
