Have a Donor-Advised Fund? Here’s How to Support Abby’s House This National DAF Day

This Thursday, October 8, is National DAF Day. It’s a day set aside for donor-advised fund holders to recommend a grant to a cause they love. If you have a DAF, there’s no simpler way to support women and children in Worcester. In our 50th year, your gift means more than ever.

What is a donor-advised fund?

A donor-advised fund, or DAF, is a charitable account set aside for giving. You’ve already made the contribution and received your tax deduction. Whenever you’re ready, you recommend grants from the fund to the causes you care about, and the fund sends the gift for you.

Donors love giving this way for a few reasons. It’s simple, because your fund sponsor handles the record-keeping and receipts, so all your giving is tracked in one place. It’s tax-smart, because you got your deduction when you funded the account and any growth in the fund is tax-free. And it’s flexible, because you decide when and where your dollars go.

How to recommend a grant to Abby’s House

It only takes a few minutes:

  1. Log in to your donor-advised fund. This is your account with your fund sponsor, such as Fidelity Charitable, Schwab Charitable, Vanguard Charitable, or a community foundation.
  2. Find us by name and EIN. Search for our legal name, Abby Kelley Foster House, Inc., and our EIN, 04-2648411, so your grant reaches the right place.
  3. Recommend your grant. Choose your amount and submit. Your fund sends the gift to us directly.

Some funds mail a paper check. If yours does, it should go to 52 High Street, Worcester, MA 01609, so your gift is credited to you.

Let us know so we can thank you

When a grant arrives from a fund sponsor, it doesn’t always tell us who to thank. If you’ve recommended a grant, please email debra@abbyshouse.org or call 508-756-5486 x221 with your name, your fund sponsor, and the amount. We’ll make sure your gift is credited to you and thank you personally.

More ways to give through your DAF

A one-time grant puts your support to work right away. Many funds also let you schedule monthly or annual grants, so your support continues all year. You can even name Abby’s House as a beneficiary of your fund, which carries your generosity into the future. If you’d like to talk that through, we’d love to hear from you.

Don’t have a DAF?

That’s more than okay. You can make a gift to Abby’s House online any time, and it goes straight to work for women and children in Worcester.

Quick answers

  • Which providers can I give from? Almost any. Fidelity Charitable, Schwab Charitable, Vanguard Charitable, and community foundations are among the most common, along with hundreds of others.
  • Will I get a tax receipt? No. You already received your deduction when you funded your DAF, so there’s nothing more to claim. You can count on a warm thank-you from our team, though.
  • Can I choose what my gift supports? Your gift goes wherever the need is greatest. If you’d like it directed to a specific program, just let us know.
  • How long does it take to arrive? Most grants arrive within a few days to a couple of weeks, depending on your fund sponsor.

However you choose to give, thank you for being part of Abby’s House. For fifty years, your generosity has kept our doors open for women and children in Worcester.

Abby’s House does not provide tax or legal advice. Please consult your own advisor about how a donor-advised fund gift may apply to your situation
