As a Black woman and the Senior Director of Human Resources at Abby’s House, this time of year is a moment for reflection. Social justice, especially around poverty, exclusion, gender inequality, and economic opportunity, is not theoretical for the women we serve; it is lived reality. Every day, our work at Abby’s House turns these principles into action, providing the support and resources women need to build self-directed lives.
Addressing Systemic Barriers
At Abby’s House, we create spaces where women and children are met with meaningful support regardless of background or circumstance. DEI, accessibility, antiracism, and belonging are more than organizational values. They guide how we support our women.
We recognize that historical and systemic inequities have limited opportunities for many women, particularly those who have been historically marginalized or who are navigating economic instability. By fostering safe environments and individualized advocacy, we empower women to build self-directed lives. We give our women the autonomy to make choices for themselves and the services they take advantage of. Here, we don’t see solutions as a one-size fits all. Care is taken to address specific needs because, well, the needs of each individual are different.
Advancing Our Commitment
We are continuing to strengthen our internal approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Earlier this week, the DEI Committee came together to clarify priorities and build an intentional path forward that supports our staff and reflects Abby’s House’s values in how we work and grow. We can’t wait to keep you all up to date with what we accomplish this year.
I’m proud to be part of an organization that turns values into action, ensuring every decision advances equity and contributes to a thriving community. At Abby’s House, social justice is more than an ideal and that shows because it’s embedded in everything we have done and will continue to do moving forward.
