Rooted in the Community
For Shayla Halloran, Abby’s House has always been more than an organization; it’s a cornerstone of her hometown. Growing up in Worcester, she was keenly aware of the meaningful work being done within these walls. When the opportunity arose to be part of it, she didn’t hesitate.
Today, Shayla works as a resident Advocate and Case Manager offering case management services that help women navigate their journeys toward stability and self-determination. No two days look exactly alike. Her time is filled with one-on-one appointments with residents, leading engaging events in the Women’s Empowerment Center, coordinating with outside organizations and service providers, and collaborating with her team.
The Heart of the Work
Ask Shayla what keeps her coming back, and she’ll tell you immediately: the women. “I feel really close to the ladies I work with,” she says, “and it’s amazing seeing them accomplish their goals.”
What makes Shayla’s role especially powerful is time. Unlike shelter settings with short-term stays, residents in Abby’s House’s affordable housing program can remain as long as they would like. This means Shayla gets to walk alongside the same women for months and sometimes years, building the kind of deep, reciprocal trust that transforms a professional relationship into something far more profound.
“These women mean a lot to me,” she says simply.
A Memory Worth Keeping
When asked about a moment that has truly stayed with her, Shayla lights up talking about the annual beach trip. Every summer, Abby’s House takes residents to the shore and for some of the women, it’s the only time all year they get to see the ocean.
“It’s a day of pure happiness,” she reflects. “It allows us to strengthen our bonds and make really nice memories together.” These moments, full of joy and simplicity, are a reminder of what the work is really about.
Behind the Scenes
People might not realize how emotionally demanding this work can be. “I’ve had some really hard days here,” Shayla acknowledges. But she’s quick to add that she couldn’t ask for a more supportive team. And remarkably, the support flows both ways. When residents sense a hard day, they don’t hesitate to check in on the staff who care for them.
Shayla brings genuine patience and sincerity to every interaction, qualities her colleagues have recognized in her, alongside a strong foundation in social work. Through her role she contributes directly to the advocacy and support pillar of Abby’s House’s mission, ensuring that safe housing is only the beginning, and that every woman has the resources and encouragement to truly thrive.
Growing Together
Working at Abby’s House has shaped Shayla as much as she has shaped the lives of the women she serves. The experience has built her confidence as a professional and deepened her commitment to social work, a field she now knows, without question, is where she belongs.
She’s particularly proud of the programming she’s helped develop: organizing new trips and events for the Women’s Empowerment Center, and helping lead both the Resident Brainstorming Committee and the Staff Policy Committee: spaces where voices are heard and change is made collaboratively.
“It means the world to me,” she says of being part of the Abby’s House team. “We are all so aligned in our mission and passion for social justice. It feels really good to be a part of the work we do here.”
Beyond the Office
Outside of work, Shayla recharges by spending time with friends and family, especially her baby nephew, traveling, watching movies, and rock climbing. The same spirit of adventure and connection she brings to her work follows her wherever she goes.
