Family homelessness rises across state, region

WORCESTER — Yacaira Diaz was pregnant with her third child, had lost her job and faced homelessness because of domestic violence when she and her children arrived at a shelter in Worcester.

“Thank God they sent us to a (shelter apartment) here in Worcester,” Ms. Diaz told legislators at the Central Massachusetts Housing and Homelessness Legislative Luncheon March 24 in Worcester. “It was like a nightmare, everything that was happening to us; it was like a change of life.”

But the Diaz family was not alone.
