Fifty Years in the Making: A Look Back at an Unforgettable Evening

By Jennifer Spicer

On May 29, 2026, something special happened at the 50th Anniversary Gala  and if you were in the room, you felt it.

The space was full of both people and purpose. Sponsors, donors, staff, volunteers, and friends of Abby’s House came together to celebrate five decades of showing up for women and children in Worcester and to prove once again that this community doesn’t just care but that it shows up.

The Night We’ve Been Building Toward

When Abby’s House first opened its doors fifty years ago, it was built on a radical idea: that every woman deserves safety, dignity, and a place to call home. That idea, rooted in the legacy of Worcester’s own Abby Kelley Foster, the fierce abolitionist and suffragist who refused to be silent, hasn’t changed. What has changed is the scale of the need, and our capacity to meet it.

The 50th Anniversary Gala was a chance to honor that history. But more than that, it was a chance to look around the room and see the people who make the mission possible: donors who’ve given for decades, volunteers who show up week after week, and community members who believe that no woman should have to face crisis alone.

What the Evening Looked Like

The gala was sold out! Which admittedly was a huge YIKES moment for the Development team, especially since it happened so quickly but still, it’s a detail that means more than a full room. It means Worcester rallied and people chose to be there to celebrate something worth celebrating.

The evening was filled with moments that reminded us why this work matters. From our featured speaker and the stories shared throughout the night, the through-line was clear: every dollar raised and every person in that room is part of something bigger than a single evening.

What You Made Possible

Together, the 50th Anniversary Gala raised $270,000 which is a reflection of what happens when a community truly shows up.

That number belongs to every sponsor who believed in this mission, every donor who gave, every auction bidder who went all in, every volunteer who showed up, every board member who leads with heart, every staff member who gives everything to this work, and every supporter who has stood by Abby’s House – for a night, for a year, or for all 50.

Because of you, more women in Worcester will wake up somewhere safe and know they aren’t doing it alone. We are so grateful. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts.

Fifty Years of Women with One Mission

Abby’s House has been providing shelter, affordable housing, and advocacy to women and children in Worcester since 1976. What started as something small has grown into a cornerstone of this community, offering safe shelter, affordable housing, permanent affordable housing, and wraparound support services to thousands of women over five decades.

The work has never been glamorous. But it has always been essential.

This anniversary is not a finish line. It’s a marker — a moment to pause, look back at how far we’ve come, and recommit to the road ahead.

To Everyone Who Made It Possible

To our gala guests, sponsors, volunteers, residents, and the Abby’s House staff who poured themselves into every detail of the evening: thank you. You made fifty years feel like a beginning, not an ending.

The mission continues and the doors stay open. And because of you, more women in Worcester will find safety, stability, and a path forward.

What Comes Next

The celebration doesn’t stop here. This fall, we’re inviting the community to keep the momentum going at the 17th Annual Abby’s House Hybrid 5K Run/Walk on October 17 in West Boylston. Whether you’re a seasoned runner or more of a “walk and catch up with friends” kind of person, this is your chance to show up for the women and children we serve one step at a time. Save the date, start recruiting your team, and stay tuned for registration details, because at Abby’s House, the work and the community behind it, never stops moving forward.
