Shelter Staff
Position Overview
The Shelter Staff is responsible for opening the shelter, welcoming guests, processing shelter requests, and managing guest needs while they are in the shelter. The position involves working evening shifts from 4:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. or early morning shifts from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m., as needed. The Shelter Staff responds to any needs that may arise during their shift and helps maintain a safe, secure, and respectful environment for shelter guests. They also provide additional supportive services to residents in supportive housing at Abby’s House as needed and work under the direct supervision of the Associate Director of Shelter Operations. Availability to work evenings and weekends is required.

Responsibilities
- Assist with orienting and training new shelter volunteers and interns.
- Ensure that the shelter provides safe, sanitary, hospitable and respectful short-term housing according to the policies set by Abby’s House.
- Provide orientation to guests of facility and educate them on shelter rules and processes.
- Assist residents with dinner preparation according to meal plan on community meal nights.
- Provide crisis intervention, safety and support to shelter guests as needed.
- Respond to phone calls and offer active listening, support and information.
- Keep an accurate, complete log of occurrences and bed assignments.
- Enforce established shelter guidelines and ensure guests are upholding a safe, respectful community environment.
- Change bed linens, remove belongings from rooms, clean rooms during room turnovers.
- Do laundry as needed.
- Maintain a high standard of cleanliness.
- Ensure that basic food, toiletries, and household items are in stock as needed.
- Identify maintenance needs and complete maintenance request forms as needed.
- Communicate with the Associate Director of Shelter Operations on an on-going basis and participate in housing team meetings.
- Facilitate community activities weekly at the shelter.
- Process requests for shelter and update shelter request forms.
- Facilitate conflict resolution for shelter guests if needed.
- Provide emergency coverage as needed
- Review shelter guest/resident concerns with Associate Director of Shelter Operations and Shelter Advocate.
- Communicate any necessary information to Live-in Shelter Staff during their evening Rounds.
- Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and annual evaluations and be committed to ongoing growth and improvement in the position.
- Maintain the confidentiality standards of Abby’s House and exemplify compassion, hospitality, and respect to the guests and residents at all times.
- Perform additional tasks as necessary.
