Senior Director of Housing
Position Overview
Abby’s House is seeking a talented, passionate, and highly motivated individual to embrace the role of Senior Director of Housing. The Senior Director of Housing provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for all aspects of the Housing Department. This role ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, fosters effective resident relations, and guides departmental staff to maintain high standards of service, equity, and accountability. This is a highly collaborative position that requires the ability to work effectively with a diverse community of staff, donors, Board members, volunteers, partners, residents, and shelter guests. The Senior Director of Housing is a member of the Senior Leadership Team and as the lead housing administrator, ensures collaboration across internal departments and external partners to deliver stable, safe, and supportive housing in alignment with organizational mission and vision.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
In alignment with the Executive Director, strategic organizational priorities, and approved policies and guidelines, the responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to the following:
Leadership and Supervision
- Provide visionary and strategic leadership to the entire Housing Department, fostering a culture of excellence, equity, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Supervise department leadership and key personnel
- Establish clear goals, performance expectations, and evaluation systems for department staff at all levels.
- Support professional development pathways, mentorship opportunities, and succession planning within the department.
- Lead regular team meetings and 1:1s to ensure alignment, shared problem-solving, and transparent communication.
- Model and promote trauma-informed leadership practices in all internal and external interactions.
- Build and sustain a departmental culture that reflects the mission and values of the organization, especially in service to residents experiencing housing insecurity and trauma.
- Lead department initiatives, policy development, and actively participate in organizational- level strategic initiatives
- Identify opportunities for process improvements and staff capacity-building
- Participate in and represent the organization in funder, partner, and stakeholder meetings as needed
- Provide input into the department budget and monitor income and expenses across all aspects of the department
- Provide high-level oversight of the organization’s physical housing portfolio in partnership with the Director of Housing Operations & Facilities, ensuring that properties are well-maintained, safe, and meet regulatory standards.
- Participate in capital planning, long-term asset management, and coordination all relevant stakeholders, partners, and consultants related to property improvements, preservation, or redevelopment.
Leasing and Compliance Oversight
- Provide oversight of tenant eligibility screenings, income certifications, leasing, and waitlist management
- Ensure full compliance with LIHTC, MRVP, and internal subsidy programs
- Guide recertification processes and support preparation for inspections and audits
- Ensure the accuracy and timeliness of reports submitted to funder and oversight agencies
Resident Services and Risk Mitigation
- Oversee behavioral and lease violation interventions in coordination with the Housing Stability Coordinator, Advocacy Team, and other relevant internal partners
- Support rent collection practices and ensure appropriate follow-up on arrears in collaboration with staff
- Uphold Trauma-Informed approaches in addressing resident issues
- Ensure lawful and timely issuances of notices, including warnings, non-renewals, and evictions
- Liaise with legal counsel on landlord-tenant issues and legal compliance
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in public administration, Urban Planning, Social Work or related field (Master’s preferred)
- 8+ years of progressively responsible experience in non-profit leadership with relevant experience working for organizations that strategically address social determinants of health needs such as housing, care access, community safety, etc.
- Knowledge of housing subsidy programs and familiarity with fair housing laws
- Proven ability to lead teams, manage budgets, and ensure compliance with all laws and regulations
- Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills
- Commitment to equity, Trauma-Informed Care, and housing stability for vulnerable populations
