This Abby’s House building that shelters and helps women is getting a $16.2M facelift

A historic building in downtown Worcester is undergoing a $16.2 million renovation to better provide services for women in need.

The building, owned by nonprofit Abby’s House, was built in the 1920s and has needed a complete replacement of all its major systems since the organization moved in 17 years ago. But with help from historic and low-income tax credits, state funds and private donations, Abby’s House is getting much more than that.

By next May, the building will be ADA-accessible with the addition of an elevator, laundry units on each floor and handicapped-accessible entrances and bathrooms.
