Billerica resident and recent Worcester State grad gives back on commencement day

Instead of wearing her cap and gown on graduation day Michaela Mooney put on her handmade mask and went to Abby’s House, more masks in hand to donate to women in need.

Mooney, 22, a recent graduate of Worcester State University and a Billerica Memorial High School class of 2016 alumni said delivering the masks to the Worcester women’s shelter was the best way to commemorate what would have been her commencement.

Picking up the idea from her mentor and WSU professor Mark Wagner, sewing face masks became not only a way to while away the hours of isolation, but a mission in self-education and determination. Never having sewed before, Mooney said she taught herself through YouTube tutorials, purchasing a small sewing machine on her own. This first machine broke, sending Mooney back online purchasing an upgraded version, easier and more reliable to use in the future.
